Woman Says Her DoorDash Driver Flipped Out on Her Over 20 Percent Tip

A simple food delivery sent one woman on TikTok in search of answers after she said her DoorDash driver was unhappy with her tip. TikToker @nicolebreaksitdown shared her story with her followers, explaining how her driver yelled at her for a low tip.

But Nicole doesn’t think the anger was justified since she tipped the driver 20 percent. Nicole asked her followers whether she was wrong to be annoyed with her unhappy delivery driver, especially since she said she would tip a restaurant server the same percentage. 

People jumped into the comments to share their thoughts on the interaction, including several people who think that the DoorDash driver was completely out of line. However, the situation did raise some questions about how much is appropriate to tip delivery drivers. 

While most of the advice won’t help Nicole now, it could prove useful to anyone else who frequents these kinds of delivery services… especially if you’re confrontation-averse and want to avoid getting into it with your delivery driver over a subpar tip.

According to Nicole, she didn’t even make it past the word “hi” before her driver started grilling her about the tip. Nicole said the first words out of the driver’s mouth were, “How much did you tip?”

Nicole said she was taken aback and stumbled over her answer, telling the driver that 20 percent is what she usually clicks on. “No, not percentage,” the driver snapped. “How much did you tip?”

Nicole told her that she didn’t know what the math worked out to and tried to confirm that the tip came through. However, the driver kept asking her about the tip amount before telling Nicole exactly how much she tipped.

Apparently the Tip Was Considered Low for the Mileage 

Not willing to let it go, the driver pulled out her phone, at which point Nicole learned that the tip came to $6. “You got me driving out here, and that’s all you tip,” the woman chastised her before telling Nicole that she should tip more. The two stared at one another for a minute before Nicole thanked her and went back inside, where she said she struggled to “process” the interaction. 

“Am I in the wrong here?” Nicole asked her followers, saying that 20 percent is what she tips in a restaurant, which she noted involves a higher degree of service. 

People Mostly Thought the Driver Was Out of Line

It would appear that the consensus was that the driver shouldn’t have approached the situation like this, even if she thought her tip was too low. “She didn’t have to accept the order,” one person wrote. “It tells her how much the order will pay her before she agrees to do it.” That prompted another person to say that the figure shown is actually the guaranteed amount they will make, which doesn’t include the tip. 

“Tips are optional and not guaranteed; that’s the risk you get when you do gig work,” they explained.

Several people said that you should tip based on how far you live from the location the delivery is coming from, included one person who said the driver behaved poorly. “Ok so [she] shouldn’t have done that,” one person wrote. “However, they get paid like $2 to deliver, and they rely on tips to make money. To make money it would be $1 per mile, so if you live 8 miles from the restaurant, then you tipped enough.”

How Much Are People Tipping These Days?

According to a 2026 Toast report, people ordering takeout from Toast restaurants tipped an average of 13.8 percent in the second quarter of 2026. Meanwhile, the report found that the average tip for full-service restaurant diners was 19.1 percent. It’s worth noting that this data excludes cash tips, so the numbers could actually be higher. 

While Nicole’s driver may have been unhappy with the $6, it seems like her generosity was a little higher than the U.S. average, which is likely why so many of her followers seemed to agree that the driver was out of line for calling Nicole out over the gratuity.
