Swerving Van Tip Leads to Recovery in $2.65 Million of Silver
An international search for a horde of U.S. silver took years, and it was a random driving tip that led to its discovery. According to The Associated Press (AP) on September 17, Norway’s Public Prosecutor Jon André Hvoslef-Eide announced a verdict for fraud and return of the silver assets.
Coverage did not mention when the original theft took place. Nor have the victims been identified.
The earliest recovery of a portion of the stolen silver occurred in 2019, following an investigation at the request of American agencies. That year, investigators found 79,500 silver coins from the theft.
Another breakthrough didn’t take place until someone reported a swerving van near Oslo, Norway in April 2025. Then, plenty more of the stolen silver came to light.
Swerving Van Alert
Upon the tip, investigators pulled over a van west of Norway’s capital, in Baerum. Upon inspection of the vehicle, they found American Eagle silver coins—tens of thousands of them.
A second van was soon inspected, as well. Like the first van, the second one contained tens of thousands of silver coins.
How Much?
All told, officials recovered almost 67,000 silver coins. Their value? About $2.65 million, which is about 25 million Norwegian kroner.
People involved in the scheme were charged with aggravated money laundering. In undisclosed ways, this theft was connected to a major U.S. investment scheme.
Sentencing Takes Place
In September 2026, three Norwegians (two males and a female) were sentenced to up to two and a half years in prison. They were convicted of organizing the plan as well as storing the silver.
Hvoslef-Edie said the following. “It is gratifying that the silver has been recovered and that a verdict has now been handed down, enabling the victims of the fraud in the U.S.A to have the misappropriated assets returned to them.”
