Neighbor Demands Three Quiet Hours in the Middle of the Day During Home Renovation for a Nap, Homeowner Says

A homeowner says they have been trying to make an ongoing renovation easier on the family next door. Their neighbor, however, apparently wants something much harder to guarantee: three quiet hours every afternoon.

The homeowner shared the dispute Sept. 17 on Reddit under the username u/Maleficent_Chicken_2. Their next-door neighbor has a young child who typically naps between 1 and 4 p.m., and the homeowner said they have asked their contractor to schedule particularly loud work outside that window whenever practical.

Construction has not always cooperated with that demand, however.

Certain stages of the project still create noise during that sacred nap time parents so often dream of. As a result, the homeowner claims the neighbor has begun approaching the workers directly and telling them to stop. U/Maleficent_Chicken_2 claims their neighbor called them “lazy” for sometimes arriving around 10 a.m. as opposed to starting earlier.

The Homeowner Says They Have Already Tried to Compromise

The homeowner stressed that the crew is not deliberately saving noisy work for the afternoon.

“We can’t guarantee three completely quiet hours every afternoon,” u/Maleficent_Chicken_2 wrote in their post, adding that they were still willing to shift especially loud work when possible.

Follow-up comments added some additional context to the overall timeline. The homeowner said the entire project should last only about three to four weeks.

Additionally, the homeowner has tried suggesting ways to soften the disruption inside the neighboring house. When one commenter, u/Some_Carrot_1827, recommended white noise, the homeowner replied, “I told her to close all windows and use a good white noise and she said it’s not working.”

The Workers Have Become Part Of The Dispute

The complaints have not stopped at the property line, either. The homeowner said the neighbor has been texting them “incessantly every afternoon” to tell u/Maleficent_Chicken_2 that the baby woke up crying.

However, u/Maleficent_Chicken_2 claims the dispute has broken containment even further to include the construction workers themselves.

That appears to be where the homeowner’s patience is wearing thinnest.

U/Maleficent_Chicken_2 said, “I completely understand that having construction noise wake up a young child is frustrating.” What they do not want is the neighbor directing, insulting, or stopping workers hired to complete the renovation.

Commenters overwhelmingly urged the homeowner to make that boundary clear: concerns about the project should go through the homeowner rather than directly to the crew.

“You can be empathetic to her situation AND set a boundary with her,” wrote u/kittycatluvrrrr, adding, “You’ve already shown empathy by listening to her and doing what you can to accommodate. You’ve done your part. And IMO she forfeited all rights to empathy once she started harassing your contractors and texting you every time her child cries.”

The homeowner said they still plan to make reasonable accommodations when the work allows it. A guaranteed three-hour pause every afternoon, however, is not something they believe feasible, given the nature of the construction project.
