Men accused of store theft.

Men Accused of $10K Store Theft Come Back a Day Later, Get Locked Inside

Two men accused of stealing more than $10,000 in merchandise from a Chicago luxury resale shop apparently made one costly mistake: They came back the next day.

Owners of Dolo Buy Sell Trade in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood recognized the men when they returned after the earlier theft, according to CBS News Chicago.

Rather than confront them immediately, the owners said they allowed the men to remain inside while employees called 911. Then they used the store’s security system to lock the door.

What followed was captured on surveillance video.

Store co-owner Faisal Khan told CBS Chicago that one of the men began yelling for employees to let him out after realizing the door had been locked.

“Let me out of here,” Khan recalled him shouting before the man began kicking the door.

The owners said two men had first visited the store the previous day and were captured on cameras stuffing high-end merchandise into their clothing.

Among the missing items was a Louis Vuitton jacket the owners valued at about $6,000. Altogether, they estimated that more than $10,000 worth of merchandise was taken.

The pair escaped that first time.

Then, according to the owners, they returned the following day — with one of the men apparently wearing a T-shirt taken from the store during the earlier visit.

Waiting For Police

Employees recognized them and decided not to immediately interfere.

Khan said they instructed an employee to let the men continue taking merchandise while the store called police and activated a panic-button system that locked the entrance.

The plan did not keep everyone inside.

Surveillance footage aired by CBS shows one man repeatedly striking the glass door before eventually breaking through it and crawling outside.

Khan said police arrived at almost the same moment the man emerged and began running.

The owners said the merchandise taken during the escape was later found stashed beneath a parked vehicle.

Police arrested one person in connection with the incident, while another masked man escaped, according to CBS Chicago. The arrested person’s name was not publicly released in the reporting reviewed for this article, preventing an independent check of court records or the specific charges filed.

The owners, meanwhile, were left with a damaged storefront — but also surveillance footage showing how an alleged repeat visit turned into a much more difficult escape.
