First-Ever ‘Sound of Music’ Museum Opens Beside the Movie’s Famous Gazebo
Fans of The Sound of Music now have a new reason to visit Salzburg. A museum dedicated to the famous movie and the real von Trapp family opened in the Austrian city on Sept. 20.
The new Sound of Music Salzburg is part of the Salzburg Museum and sits on the grounds of Hellbrunn Palace. Even better, it is right next to one of the movie’s most recognizable filming locations.
The glass gazebo used in The Sound of Music is still standing in the palace park. According to the museum, it is the only film set from the movie that remains in Salzburg.
The museum itself takes visitors through both the Hollywood version of the story and what actually happened to Maria and the von Trapp family.

The original gazebo is part of the museum visit, but guests aren’t allowed inside. Instead, the museum built another one that they can actually enter.
This version has a 360-degree projection inside that recreates the iconic “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” scene in 3D. The Salzburg Museum calls it one of the main highlights of the new attraction. The museum has nearly 450 items, including costumes, props, movie posters, and recordings.
The Museum Also Tells the Real Family’s Story
One part of the museum focuses on how The Sound of Music became such a huge hit, while another looks at the real von Trapp family. The exhibits include historical photographs, documents, and personal items, along with information about the family’s departure from Austria in 1938.
Elisabeth von Trapp, whose father Werner was one of the original Trapp Family Singers, attended the museum opening. She told the Associated Press that visitors get a sense of both The Sound of Music and her family’s story.
Tickets Start at 8 Euros
Sound of Music Salzburg is located at Fürstenweg 33-35 at Hellbrunn Palace. Adult admission is 8 euros, while a family ticket for one or two adults with children costs 16 euros. Reduced admission is 4.80 euros.
Visitors coming from central Salzburg can also take bus 25 to Schloss Hellbrunn. The museum says the ride takes about 25 to 30 minutes from the city center or Salzburg Central Station.
