Airline Alliance Round-The-World Travelers Can Now Fight Jet Leg with a New App

Anyone who has spent the first few days of a big trip struggling to stay awake might appreciate a new perk from oneworld. The airline alliance has partnered with the jet lag app Timeshifter to give certain travelers personalized plans for adjusting to new time zones.

The new benefit is available now to customers who purchase a Round the World trip directly through oneworld.com. They’ll receive a complimentary Timeshifter subscription covering their entire itinerary, from the first flight until they return home.

According to oneworld, its Round the World customers visit an average of seven stops and spend about three months traveling.

The alliance includes airlines such as American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, British Airways, Qantas and Qatar Airways. Its Round the World network reaches nearly 1,000 destinations.

Timeshifter creates a plan based on a traveler’s flights, normal sleep schedule, chronotype, and personal preferences. Instead of offering the same jet lag advice to everyone, the app adjusts its recommendations to each person’s itinerary.

One of the biggest parts of the plan involves timing light and darkness exposure. Timeshifter can also recommend when to sleep or nap and when to use or avoid caffeine. Travelers can choose whether the app includes melatonin advice.

The subscription provided through the new partnership takes every flight and time-zone change on the Round the World itinerary into account. Timeshifter says its app has more than 1.7 million users and is also used by professional athletes and astronauts.

Who Can Get the Free Subscription?

The complimentary subscription is for customers who purchase eligible Round the World trips on oneworld.com, not just anyone taking an international flight on one of the alliance’s airlines.

Oneworld currently sells two types of Round the World fares through its website. The oneworld Explorer fare is based on the number of continents visited, while Global Explorer is based on the total distance traveled.

Trips can get pretty ambitious. A oneworld Explorer itinerary can include between three and 16 flights, last anywhere from 10 days to a year, and visit three to six continents.
