A northwest Atlanta resident is lucky to be alive after a fire tore through her home around 9:20 a.m. on Aug. 21, 2026. Atlanta News First shared video footage of the smoke from the fire, which could be seen billowing up against the otherwise green landscape of the nearby trees.
According to WSB-TV, NewsChopper 2 was flying around the area, documenting firefighters as they worked to keep the flames from reaching the surrounding homes in the neighborhood.
Fortunately, it sounds like a resident and their young child were able to escape the blaze without incident, although you have to imagine that this was a scary way to start the day. Of course, what may be even more terrifying is how the homeowner thinks the fire got started, since it was a total freak accident involving some of the family’s pets.

The Homeowner Says Her Cats May Be to Blame
An early morning blaze ignited on North Avenue in northwest Atlanta, near the Georgia Tech campus. According to reports from WSB-TV, the homeowner believes her cats are to blame for the fire. She shared her theory with first responders, telling them that she thinks two of her cats may have knocked the turtle’s heat lamp onto a pile of books.
According to the outlet, firefighters were able to rescue one of the cats from the home, but another cat remained missing. They were also able to safely remove several ducks and chickens from the backyard farm area. It sounds like crews were still on scene well into the late morning on Friday as they worked to prevent the flames from spreading beyond the initial home.
Heat Lamps Can Be a Fire Hazard
Heat lamps and warming lamps are used to help reptiles and small animals stay warm. They are commonly used in indoor and outdoor settings and have been known to cause fires even when used correctly.
That’s because Cornell’s Small Farms Program says that there are a few things that can make these kinds of devices a little higher risk, including the type of lamp, how it’s secured, your breaker panel, and using them in areas without smoke detectors.
While what happened to this Atlanta-area resident was purely a fluke, it does serve as a reminder of some of what to consider before using these types of lamps in and around your home.
