At least two families in Philadelphia experienced a terrifying moment when their children were attacked by dogs this week. The incidents were unrelated but still startlingly similar, according to 6ABC Action News, which reported that the first victim was a 6-year-old boy in North Philadelphia.
The child was attacked while on the sidewalk with friends a little before 7 p.m. on Aug. 19, 2026.
A second attack happened in the city’s Kensington section, also around 7 p.m. on the same date. This time it was a 6-year-old girl who was injured.
Both children had to be rushed to the hospital, but both are believed to be in stable condition at this time. There doesn’t appear to be any motive for the attacks, so sadly, both cases seem to be freak accidents.
The First Attack Happened With a Dog the Child Knew
The young boy was playing outside on the sidewalk with his friends when he was attacked by his neighbor’s dog. Action News says that the incident happened in the 2400 block of North 25th Street. The child had bite wounds on his back and arms that were bad enough to require medical attention, and his mother took him to the hospital for treatment.
Around the same time, a girl was attacked in Kensington. Action News says that the family was visiting people they know when the dog jumped up onto the bed where the girl was and attacked, biting her face. She was then rushed to St. Christopher’s Hospital, where she was expected to receive stitches.
People on Facebook Pointed Fingers When It Came to Who to Blame
Action News shared the report on Facebook, prompting comments and anger from followers. “I feel for the kid, but also for the dog,” one person wrote. “Irresponsible owners not raising or training their dogs properly leads to s–t like this.” They followed up with some clarification to their statement, writing, “For the inquiring minds: Yes, I’m advocating for the dog because they have no voice! The kid is fine.”
“The dog owner should be responsible for this,” another person wrote.
When another person asked why the one dog was loose on the city street in the first place, the first response blamed the owner. While it’s clear that a lot of people are upset about what happened, especially since it involved such young children, these types of incidents are fairly common.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, approximately 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year. And that’s not all; around 334,000 will require a trip to the emergency room as a result, while another 466,000 will end up in another medical setting (like urgent care or their doctor’s office). However, the most concerning number is the fact that nearly half of these victims are children under the age of 12.
While knowing how common this is may not do much to make the parents of these children feel any better, it does highlight a need for more vigilance when children are in close contact with dogs, no matter whether they are strangers or those pups that live right next door.
