Airbnb is Putting an End to Some of Its Most Controversial Checkout Chores
That long list of chores waiting at the end of an Airbnb vacation could soon get exponentially shorter. The company is changing what hosts can require guests to do before checkout, and this move includes putting an end to demands that travelers wash dishes or start a load of laundry.
The new policy applies to reservations booked on or after Nov. 20, 2026. It also addresses surprise house rules, requiring hosts to disclose their instructions before someone books a stay.
On Oct. 20, Airbnb outlined the restrictions, saying hosts should leave time-consuming cleaning work to cleaners rather than vacationing guests.
The announcement follows years of complaints from travelers who have questioned why they’re expected to clean rental properties themselves, particularly when they’re already paying a cleaning fee.

Under the updated rules, generally, hosts cannot require guests to strip beds or wash and put away dishes. Taking garbage away from the property is also off the table, along with other tasks that inherently demand substantial time or effort.
That’s not to say guests are entirely off the hook for tidying up, though. Hosts can still ask travelers to gather used towels or sort their trash, even if more time-consuming cleaning chores are no longer permitted.
There are also exceptions for certain properties. For instance, Airbnb‘s policy allows for special requests involving trash disposal in bear country, where securing garbage can be important for wildlife safety. Water restrictions during droughts may also justify requests that wouldn’t ordinarily be permitted.
No More Surprise House Rules After Booking
The changes extend beyond cleaning. Hosts must disclose their house rules and requests in a designated section of their listing before guests reserve a property.
That means a traveler shouldn’t arrive to discover an entirely new list of obligations posted on the refrigerator. Hosts are prohibited from adding requirements afterward through messages or signs inside the rental.
The company is also tightening rules on fines. Hosts cannot impose their own penalties on guests, although travelers remain responsible for damage and unusually extensive cleaning under Airbnb’s existing guest policies.
Airbnb is also organizing house rules into seven standardized categories, covering matters such as quiet hours and whether pets are permitted. Travelers will be able to review the rules in their reservation details.
Not everyone is pleased. Some hosts have criticized the restrictions in Airbnb’s official community forum, arguing that unwashed dishes and accumulated garbage could create hygiene problems during longer stays.
Airbnb says it will flag requests that violate the policy and give hosts opportunities to correct them or appeal. Persistent violations could result in warnings appearing on listings or reduced visibility in search results.
The new rules take effect for reservations booked on or after Nov. 20, giving guests a clearer picture of what’s expected before they book. And when checkout day arrives, washing dishes and doing laundry won’t have to be part of the itinerary.
