WATCH: Thief Robbing a Vacant Home Makes a Run For It, Leaving a Perfect Trail

An Oklahoma deputy responding to a burglary call at a vacant home got an unexpected demonstration of just how far a suspect was willing to go to escape arrest. Rather than surrender, the man dove headfirst through a closed glass window.

According to timestamps on bodycam footage, the encounter happened Oct. 1 at a property near Harrah and Britton roads in Oklahoma County, where deputies had been called about a possible burglary.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office later took to social media and shared the bodycam video of the encounter, joking in the caption that the suspected copper thief had missed his calling as a Hollywood stuntman.

A deputy responding to the vacant property found that a back door had been forced open. Inside, he encountered a man allegedly removing copper from appliances and walls, according to sheriff’s spokesperson Aaron Brilbeck, as reported by KOCO.

The body camera footage shows the deputy confronting the man and repeatedly ordering him to get on his knees.

In lieu of complying, the suspect moves into another room before suddenly running toward a window and crashing through the glass. The deputy went to pursue, opting for the more traditional approach of going through a nearby door. However, the door proved uncooperative and required additional attention.

By the time the deputy made it outside, the man was gone. Deputies searched the surrounding area using a patrol vehicle and a drone, according to KOCO; however, they did not immediately locate him.

“This is an experienced deputy,” said Brilbeck, as reported by KOCO. “He’d never seen anything quite like it before, and by the time he got outside, our suspect was long gone.”

The Suspect Left Behind an Important Clue

The suspect may have escaped through the window, but he reportedly left behind something considerably more useful to investigators than the copper he had been trying to steal.

His backpack was still inside the house, and it contained his driver’s license.

In the same video, the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office states, “Fortunately the suspect, 24 year old Rayven Lee Wooten of Nicoma Park, left his backpack and drivers licence behind. Mr. Wooten is facing charges that include Burglary, Resisting Arrest, and Obstructing an Officer.”

The sheriff’s office did not indicate in its Facebook post whether Wooten had been taken into custody.
