Nebraska Man With Warrant for Arrests Insists He Has to Get Home to His Kids, Deputies Say

A Nebraska man pulled over after deputies say he reached nearly 100 mph had a scheduling problem once he realized an arrest was coming. According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Michael Ludwick admitted he had a warrant but told deputies he didn’t have time to be arrested because he needed to get home to his children.

The encounter began Sunday evening when CAT deputies spotted Ludwick turning west onto West Maple Road from 114th Street without stopping at a stop sign. Deputies say he was driving a Dodge Challenger at the time.

Just west of 120th Street, Ludwick accelerated to nearly 100 mph and cut off another vehicle before turning north onto 132nd Street, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies ultimately conducted a traffic stop in a Baker’s parking lot.

It was there that Ludwick immediately acknowledged he had a warrant, but his explanation for why deputies shouldn’t arrest him raised another concern. The sheriff’s office says Ludwick told deputies he had to get home to his kids.

The Facebook police report could not be embedded into the article, but you are able to look at it via this link. Rather than simply taking Ludwick’s word for it, deputies followed up on what he told them. They located two children at the home and found them safe, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies also determined the children had been left at the residence for what the department described as an extended period of time. The sheriff’s office did not specify exactly how long the children had been alone or provide their ages in its announcement.

Ludwick was transported to Douglas County Corrections and booked for reckless driving, child abuse, and a traffic warrant stemming from a speeding ticket previously issued by CAT deputies. His explanation for needing to get home had therefore become part of what led deputies to another accusation.

Jail Records List Child Abuse by Neglect Charge

Douglas County Corrections records identify Ludwick as 42-year-old Michael C. Ludwick and show he was admitted at 9:26 p.m. on October 4. The record does not specify a projected release date.

The jail lists his charges as child abuse by neglect with no serious injury, reckless driving, and speeding 16 to 20 mph on an interstate. The sheriff’s office described the third booking matter more broadly as a traffic warrant originating from a CAT-issued speeding ticket.

Ludwick’s jail record lists a bond amount of $7,500 or 10% and indicates there was no hold. The charges remain accusations, and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office noted that Ludwick is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
