80-Year-Old Man Crashes Into Someone’s Home When Parking
An Everett, Washington resident was getting ready for the day when, in an instant, a truck drove into their home.
Per the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, the truck was driven by an 80-year-old man who had his dog with him.
The 80-year-old reportedly told officers he became “temporarily unresponsive,” which caused him to lose control of his truck.
The elderly man, his dog, and the resident weren’t injured when officers arrived. Officers made sure the man was transported home safely with his dog.
The 80-year-old did not face any charges for the accident.
“Thank you to our deputies for their quick response and for helping ensure everyone involved was safe,” the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook.
Similar Crashes in Washington
In Washington, there have been several crashes involving older drivers in recent months.
In January of this year, similar to last week’s incident, an elderly woman drove into a Seattle house.
Additionally, this past weekend, an 80-year-old man was killed after crossing the median and driving into oncoming traffic.
According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, in 2025, 112 drivers age 70 and older were involved in fatal crashes, a new record. It is unclear why the number of incidents are rising.
Nationwide, the numbers are shocking.
Nationwide Data
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that around 19% of drivers killed in crashes are 65 or older.
This is a 50% increase over the last 50 years.
Older drivers face higher risks of injury in car crashes due to potential cognitive decline affecting awareness, declining physical health, slower reaction time, and similar factors.
It is not 100% clear what the main reason is for the 50% increase – but there are several contributing factors.
Contributing Factors
There are more elderly drivers on the road than ever before.
In the past 20 years alone in America, the number of licensed drivers older than 65 has grown to around 52 million. One out of every six drivers are older.
Additionally, population growth rates have been slowing among younger age groups to the point that seniors are starting to outnumber children globally.
