Homeowner Catches Alleged Intruder and Holds Him at Gunpoint for Deputies
A suspected break-in came to an abrupt end in North Carolina when a homeowner reportedly caught the man in the act and proceeded to hold him at gunpoint until sheriff’s deputies arrived.
The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched at 9:14 a.m. Sept. 15 to a residence in the 200 block of Sally Freeman Road in Colerain for a reported break-in in progress.
By the time deputies reached the house, the homeowner had the suspect at gunpoint.
Deputies took 44-year-old Carlton Moore of Colerain into custody.
Deputies Linked The Arrest To Another Break-In

The incident soon developed into more than a single alleged break-in.
Deputies said that while investigating what happened at the home, they identified Moore as a suspect in another break-in reported the previous week in the same 200 block of Sally Freeman Road.
Deputies proceeded to search Moore’s residence. According to the sheriff’s office, that search led to the discovery of items stolen from the home involved in the earlier break-in.
That discovery resulted in Moore facing allegations connected to both incidents along the same road.
One Call Led Deputies to Two Cases
North Carolina law treats breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering as two separate offenses. State law makes it a felony to break or enter a building with the intent to commit a felony or larceny inside. Then, a separate larceny statute covers property taken during that offense. That means a person can face charges both for unlawfully entering a property and for allegedly taking something once inside.
Ultimately, the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office charged Moore with two counts of breaking and entering and two counts of larceny after breaking and entering.
He was also charged with two counts of possession of stolen goods.
The sheriff’s office said Moore would be housed at the Durham County Jail following his arrest.
