Homeowner’s Post About the ‘Real Pains of Homeownership’ Goes Viral

Threads is quickly becoming a popular place for people to head when they want to share their thoughts and feelings about a variety of topics. And while politics and pop culture are always hot topics, occasionally you’ll get the surprising post that takes off because it resonates so much with people. 

Threads user y_kendra_why recently experienced this phenomenon when she made a post about some of her frustrations after becoming a homeowner. “Ima start a series called ‘The Real Pains of Homeownership’ where I tell y’all about the things most don’t when it comes to homeownership,” she began a six-thread series where she shared complaints about everything from the cost of smoke detectors ($630 for nine new ones) to how much you’ll need to spend if you want to install a fence (a whopping $5,000 to $6,000). 

But it’s what people shared after her post ended that made this thread stand out, especially those who shared how stories like these are the exact reasons they don’t have any interest in buying a home. Of course, homeownership isn’t all bad, and there are plenty of great things about it.

That being said, there are dozens of people in the replies to the post sharing “their pains,” and proving that there really is a flip side to every coin.

When it comes to owning a home, those big-ticket items and fixes always stand out. Take one person’s comment, in which they shared how their parents had to drop tens of thousands of dollars on a plumbing issue. “My parents just had the whole front yard dug up for a sewer line issue—the line from the house was never connected to the sewer—and are looking at a $35,000 bill,” they wrote.

Even the Upkeep is A Lot

People weren’t just talking about the expenses of owning a home, either. Some people shared their least favorite chores, with a lot of people naming yardwork as the biggest annoyance. 

“My current gripe is one of my recessed ceiling lights went out,” another person wrote. “I thought it was a bulb, but it looks LED. So now I need to research on where I can find a replacement and how to do it… on top of dealing with the weeds in my backyard.”

Homeownership Rates Are Lower Than Expected

With threads like this going viral on social media, it may not come as a surprise that some reports say homeownership rates in the U.S. are on the low side. According to Axios, a new report shows that homeownership rates are lower than commonly assumed, with the traditional rate sitting at 65.3 percent, while the latest figures show the number is actually closer to 53.1 percent.

Based on the complaints a lot of people have about owning a home, it may come as no surprise. That being said, it looks like the rising cost of living, interest rates, and home prices themselves are also preventing those who want to buy a home from even getting the chance to. But after reading this thread, they may have second thoughts about the added costs and responsibilities as well.
