Parking dispute escalates.

Parking Dispute Leads to Weird Tension Between Neighbors

When it comes to neighborly disputes, chances are that you’ve heard about some doozies (like that man who barged into his neighbor’s house to throw dog poop at him). But not every negative interaction between neighbors has to cause a stink (pun intended).

In fact, sometimes not getting along with your neighbor can look a lot more subtle. Take, for example, one Reddit user who goes by the handle Vetriol. According to them, a disagreement about parking spaces led to an ongoing conflict between the two.

The main source of aggravation? The OP says that his neighbor “licks this thumb and jabs my side mirror” every morning when he passes by to get to his car. While the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it exchange may not seem like a big deal to everyone, it does highlight how easily things can escalate between neighbors.

Fortunately, there are some things he can try doing to smooth things over, even if the neighbors have a rocky history.

The Issue Began a Month Ago

The OP shared a video of the alleged side mirror jabbing on Reddit, along with an explanation of how things got to this point. “A month ago, he mistakenly parked in my reserved spot, and I asked him if he could move his truck,” they wrote. “He took it very personally and has been doing this bulls–t every time he walks to his car.”

People were quick to offer the OP suggestions about how to handle the issue, even though most of them would undoubtedly cause tensions to escalate. “Do something mysterious, like leave an asparagus on his wiper,” the highest-rated comment on the post said.

“A little tiny bit of paste food coloring under the door handle will get everywhere, and it takes a few days to wash off,” another person added. “Red is particularly alarming when it appears, and you have no idea where it came from.”

However, a more level-headed response came much further down the thread from a person who advised the OP against retaliating, writing, “Never wrestle with a pig. You will both end up covered in mud, and the pig enjoys it.”

There Are Ways to Deal With Conflict Between Neighbors

Most people prefer to keep things pretty when it comes to their neighbors, especially when they live in close quarters, which seems to be the case based on the OP’s video. However, there are ways to address issues with a neighbor that won’t cause things to further deteriorate, according to NPR, and most of the time a simple conversation will do.

“Introduce yourself. Humanize yourself. Tell them, ‘Hey, I’m your neighbor. I don’t think we’ve actually met before,'” Sasha Philip, a mediator and arbitrator expert who spoke with NPR, said about settling neighborhood conflicts. The advice suggests keeping things light and maybe getting to know one another a bit before you even address the problem, keeping things neutral at first.

Of course, this approach won’t work in every situation, especially if a neighbor is afraid that things could turn violent if a confrontation were to happen. However, NPR’s advice does sound like it could be a good fit for a situation like the OP’s, since it seems like both parties feel slightly wronged by the other, but not enough so that it has actually turned into a full-fledged confrontation yet.
