Animal advocates in one Tennessee town are banding together to pull off what may be the largest rescue to ever take place in Hawkins County. According to The Rogersville Review, the Hawkins County Humane Society received a call to a residence located in the Mount Carmel region.
Once they arrived, rescuers say they were faced with an unexpected discovery, and they found approximately 65 dogs and 10 cats and/or kittens at the location, all of which needed to be rescued. The process was made worse by the fact that they also discovered the property owner unresponsive in the front yard when they arrived.
Members of the Hawkins County Humane Society then had to band together to not only rescue the 75 animals they were called about, but also to help ensure that the person who had previously been caring for them would be okay as well.
Here’s what we know about the shocking rescue, including how the animals are doing now.
The Animals Were Living in and Around a Camper
According to reports from the Hawkins County Humane Society, they were originally called out to the home on Aug. 8, 2026, to help with a suspected hoarding situation. However, when they arrived, they discovered the unresponsive homeowner and immediately called 911.
Fortunately, first responders arrived within minutes, and they were able to take them to the hospital, leaving the Humane Society officials to focus on the animals.
Conditions Were Cramped Inside the Camper
Sadly, they quickly discovered that the conditions in the camper were dire, and some puppies were found piled on top of one another, making it hard for them to breathe. Everyone jumped into action and quickly started rescuing the animals, many of which were stored in large tubs.
Police, rescue workers, shelter staff, and volunteers spent the day carefully and quickly removing the animals they could reasonably take, ensuring that any animals that were left behind would be cared for until they could find additional housing.
However, other nearby rescue organizations sprang into action to take more of the animals in. That includes one terrified mama dog who actually began giving birth to her litter of puppies mid-rescue.
The Humane Society Is Asking for Help
According to reports, the Hawkins County Humane Society is now in need of more help from the community. Not only are they in search of donations to help cover things like medical care and food costs, but they are also in need of some forever homes for the rescued animals who are ready to be adopted.
Even while asking for help, Hawkins County Humane Society still took a moment to share how grateful they were for all the aid they had already received. “The Mount Carmel Police Department was tremendous,” the Humane Society reportedly said. “Their officers stayed with us, helped wherever they were needed, and were willing to get their hands dirty. Their department should be very proud of them.”
