Wendy’s Worker Asked to Eat Lunch on a Stranger’s Porch, And Something Unexpected Happened

A Wendy’s worker searching for somewhere to spend her lunch break knocked on a stranger’s door with an unexpected request: could she sit on the porch and eat there?

The stranger, Florida homeowner Abigail Mwaungulu, did not turn away the Wendy’s employee, Dara. Instead, PEOPLE reports, Mwaungulu accepted Dara’s request, and this marked the beginning of their friendship.

Mwaungulu shared Ring footage to her TikTok account, @abigailsauthentic, on July 16, showing Dara approaching Mwaungulu’s porch to ask about spending her lunch break there.

According to Local 12/WKRC, the encounter took place in Palm Beach County, Florida, and as of August 13, the video amassed over 1.5 million views on TikTok. Viewers were moved by the kind gesture and by the friendship that sparked thanks to this chance meeting.

Kindness doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s just sharing your porch. #westpalmbeach #wendys #florida #funny

Ring footage shows Dara approaching the home and asking if she could sit on the porch during her break.

“Hi, I work at the Wendy’s over there. I’m on my break and didn’t want to walk all the way home,” Dara said. “Can I just sit right there and eat my lunch?”

Local 12/WKRC writes that Dara had been having a difficult day at work, and soon into their first meeting, the two struck up a conversation. This interaction might have gone nowhere, but WPBF writes, Abigail reasoned, “If I was having a rough day, I would want someone to be kind to me as well.”

Indeed, the outlet reports, Dara would later reveal, “I was trying not to cry when I was eating because I was so happy she said yes.”

A Porch Becomes a Portal to Happiness

According to PEOPLE, the connection did not end when Dara’s lunch break finished, and the two not only stayed in contact but appeared in more videos together, chronicling their friendship.

Viewers were curious how they could support Dara. Mwaungulu went on to create a GoFundMe, with Dara’s permission, to support her dream of pursuing a career dedicated to caring for others. The fundraiser reveals that Dara walks to work each day, and donations would assist with transportation and education.

As of Aug. 13, the fundraiser has received over $15,000, with a total goal of $20,000.

What started with a stranger looking for somewhere to eat her lunch ultimately reached millions of viewers. As Mwaungulu wrote on the fundraiser, “Sometimes all it takes is one unexpected conversation on a porch to remind us how powerful kindness can be!”
