For square spindles, you’ll need a dummy spindle bracket that screws onto the wood. A rosette cover hides the metal plate, and the knob slides onto the spindle.
For round spindle holes, use a large bolt from the hardware store. The bolt head sits in the back of the wood, and the screw threads directly into the knob. This makes a strong hook that can hold heavy towels.
Spacing these knobs evenly on reclaimed wood creates a custom rack that works on any wall.
2. Vintage Faucet Handles

Old faucet handles can add an industrial or farmhouse vibe, depending on their design. Their shape makes them great for hooks, but if you screw them flat against a board, there’s no space for a towel. The fix? Use small copper pipe pieces as spacers.
Here’s how: Run a galvanized bolt through the front of the handle, through a 1.5-inch piece of copper pipe, and into the wood. This creates enough space for the towel to hang behind the handle. Use a spade bit to make a recess on the back of the wood so the nut sits flush, keeping the rack flat against the wall. Adding both hot and cold handles can also bring a fun pop of color!
3. Wooden Ladders

A vintage wooden ladder is a great way to store towels, especially for households that use a lot of them. Leaning an old step ladder against the wall gives you multiple rungs for drying, allowing air to flow better than a regular hook. This helps reduce mildew and keeps towels fresher.
To avoid snagging towels, sand any rough spots on the ladder. If the feet are slippery on tile floors, add rubber grippers for extra stability. This solution doesn’t require drilling into walls or tiles, making it a renter-friendly way to add storage.
