Before you dive headfirst into a project, it’s wise to separate the truly useful hacks from the ones that look better on screen than they perform in real life. Some popular projects can lead to more trouble than they’re worth.

1. Peel-and-Stick Countertop Makeovers

The allure of peel-and-stick contact paper for countertops is undeniable for a quick, cheap fix. For the price of a few rolls of adhesive vinyl, you can seemingly get the look of marble, granite, or butcher block in a single afternoon. The process looks straightforward: clean the surface, unroll the paper, smooth it out, and trim the excess.
Unfortunately, the real-world performance of this DIY rarely lives up to its on-screen promise. Contact paper is, at its core, a thin layer of plastic or vinyl with an adhesive backing. It was not designed to withstand the rigors of a kitchen or bathroom counter. These surfaces face daily exposure to moisture, heat from pots and pans, sharp knives, and abrasive cleaning products. Contact paper is simply not built for that level of use.
2. Fast and Loose Tile and Backsplash Hacks

These videos show creators attaching tiles directly to walls with construction adhesive or using peel-and-stick mats, skipping traditional mortar and grout. The issue with these shortcuts is that they skip the most important steps that give a tile installation its longevity and durability. Mortar provides a strong, permanent bond to the substrate, while grout fills the gaps to lock the tiles together and prevent water from getting behind them. Sealing the grout protects it from stains and moisture. This is one kitchen upgrade that buyers might not like.
3. Unsupported Floating Fixtures

Floating vanities, sinks, and shelves offer a clean, minimalist aesthetic that can make a room feel larger and more open. Online videos make installing them seem like a breeze. A creator might appear to simply attach a heavy sink or a set of shelves directly to the drywall, load them up with decor, and call it a day. Of the three trends, this is the most dangerous. Drywall has little structural strength and isn’t meant to support heavy, cantilevered weight. Mounting a floating sink or a loaded shelf directly to it can cause the fixture to rip out, leading to damage and safety hazards. Proper installation requires anchoring to wall studs, and for very heavy items, adding extra blocking between them. Relying on drywall anchors to hold hundreds of pounds is a risk not worth taking.
