Neighbors dog.

Homeowner Gets Yelled at Over Neighbor’s Dog 6 Times, Considers Putting Up a Sign

A homeowner is tired of getting blamed for a neighbor’s dog that keeps lying in the road. After several drivers stopped to complain, the homeowner came up with a simple idea: put a sign in the yard telling everyone the dog belongs to someone else.

The small dachshund mix lives with neighbors who have a house set far back in the woods. Meanwhile, the homeowner’s property sits right beside the road, making it the first place drivers look when they spot the loose dog.

Over the past month, six people have stopped to warn the family about the animal. Each time, the homeowner has explained that the dog isn’t theirs and promised to contact its owners. Those messages haven’t done much to solve the problem.

Now, after another driver yelled at the homeowner, a yard sign seems like the easiest way to stop the complaints. However, the family is hesitant to involve animal control because of a tense history with the dog’s owners.

In the Reddit post, the homeowner explained that the little dog spends much of its time near their house. Although the family likes the animal, they never agreed to take care of it.

Things reached a breaking point when an angry woman drove past and shouted, “YOUR DOG IS IN THE ROADDDD.”

The homeowner wanted to put up a sign reading, “The little white dog in the road is not ours.”

Despite the frustration, the family hasn’t turned its back on the dog. In a reply, the homeowner explained that they leave food and water outside, while their children play with him every day.

“He is loved. He is sweet. I’m just tired of people getting mad at us for the road issue,” the homeowner wrote.

Trouble Next Door

When commenters suggested calling animal control, the homeowner explained why that could create a bigger problem.

Most of the surrounding homes belong to members of the same extended family. According to the homeowner, those neighbors have blamed them for child welfare complaints they never made and threatened to spread manure or place pig pens along their property line.

In a separate dispute, a neighbor’s pit bull reportedly attacked the family’s cat. After the homeowner threatened to call the pound, the dog’s owner allegedly sent a message warning that he would come to their house after work.

With that history in mind, the family would rather avoid another confrontation. They have also installed four security cameras around their property.

Reddit Wants Action

Many commenters agreed that the proposed sign was reasonable, although some thought it wasn’t enough to protect the dog.

“You have told them many times that their dog is out on the road, and they have yet to do anything to prevent that from happening,” one commenter wrote, urging the family to contact animal control.

Others suggested adding the actual owner’s phone number or address to the sign so passing drivers would know whom to contact.

One reply recommending that the homeowner put the owners’ number on the sign received more than 3,000 upvotes.

Another commenter argued that the animal’s safety should come before any dispute between neighbors. With the dog regularly lying in the road, several people worried that a passing vehicle could eventually hit him.

The homeowner hasn’t confirmed whether the sign has been installed. For now, the family continues to provide food, water, and attention to the little dog, even though he belongs to someone else.
