Dog Urinates on Plane, Leaving Passengers With a Bizarre Choice

Airline passengers are accustomed to delays for just about anything. They’ve contended with it all—from bad weather to mechanical problems. One group of travelers, however, faced a considerably stranger decision after a dog reportedly urinated aboard their aircraft.

Rather than immediately delaying departure for additional cleaning, the pilot reportedly offered the passengers a choice: wait for the cabin to be cleaned or leave on schedule and tolerate the lingering smell.

The unusual moment was captured in a video shared by television host Jennifer Coffey, who posted the footage on Threads. Although she was not aboard the affected flight, the video shows travelers raising their hands in response to the pilot’s question.

Aviation website View From The Wing reported on the incident on Oct. 27, identifying the setting as a Delta Air Lines gate at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

“Not my flight but a pilot just came out and announced that a dog had relieved himself on the plane during the last flight,” shared Coffey in her Instagram post, adding that the pilot then “asked for a show of hands how many passengers just wanted to deal with the smell to get home on time.” Coffey added a hearty, teasing cheer of ‘Democracy!”

The video shows several passengers raising their hands. However, the final result of the informal vote is unclear, as is whether the plane departed on time or underwent additional cleaning.

The clip quickly attracted attention online, and with the attention came a whole spectrum of opinions. Some travelers said they would gladly tolerate an unpleasant smell to avoid a delay. Others argued that cleaning an aircraft after an animal accident should not be optional.

Debate Raises Questions About Pets on Planes

The discussion soon extended beyond the pilot’s decision, with viewers questioning whether pets should be allowed in passenger cabins at all. Others defended the animals, noting that accidents can happen during long days of travel.

Under Delta Air Lines‘ pet policy, qualifying small dogs and cats can travel in the cabin provided they remain inside approved carriers that fit beneath the seat. Those carriers must be leak-proof, and the animals are generally required to stay inside them throughout the flight.

Different requirements apply to trained service dogs, which are allowed to accompany eligible passengers without ordinary pet carriers. The U.S. Department of Transportation also permits airlines to require assurances that service dogs will not relieve themselves onboard, or can do so in a sanitary manner, on flights lasting eight hours or longer.

It is not known whether the dog involved in this incident was a pet or a trained service animal, and no flight number has been publicly confirmed.

The incident leaves a question that divided viewers of the video: Should passengers be able to accept an unpleasant cabin to avoid a delay, or should the airline make the cleaning decision regardless of how travelers vote?
