Homeowner complains about costs.

$1,000 Is the New $100: Homeowner’s Take on Rising Costs Strikes a Chord

A lot of today’s homeowners feel like things cost more than they used to (thanks to inflation, wars, shortages, etc.). It seems like everyone on social media is complaining about rising costs, especially when it comes to those things you can’t do without, like utilities.

But one TikToker says that she’s noticed a huge jump in the price of everything related to homeownership, and she’s sharing her frustration in a funny video discussing the rising costs. According to @ericaxconcon, prices have gone up tenfold since she bought her home, and she says that $1,000 is the new $100.

Commenters agree with her statement, and a lot of them took to the comments to share their own observations about rising costs.

And while the TikToker’s math is an exaggeration of the overall inflation rate, she’s not the only one out there making the comparison between the two figures. In fact, a lot of people claim to be feeling the same way about today’s economy.

Woman Says Costs Have Gone Up Tenfold

The video began with the TikToker sitting in her car with an iced coffee while talking to her followers. “If there’s one thing that homeownership has taught me thus far, it’s that $1,000 is basically the new $100,” she said, noting that every time she goes to buy something or do something for her house, it seems to cost $1,000 (furniture, appliances, plumber, etc.).

“At this point, the money is just flying out of our wallets,” she continued. “It’s kind of crazy how comfortable we’ve gotten with saying, ‘Oh, what’s another $1,000.'”

She Isn’t the Only One Feeling This Way

Commenters said they were having a similar experience with their own homes. “It’s truly so brutal,” one person wrote. “We did the biggest stuff to make it livable and now are doing little projects here and there to save.”

But it’s not just @ericaxconcon who’s sharing posts like this. On Oct. 17, Joshua Gholson posted something similar on his Facebook page. “$1,000 is the new $100 in today’s economy,” he wrote. On Reddit, a person posted about increased costs, asking if everything was just too expensive these days.

“My wife and I make good money, but I swear it doesn’t go far,” they wrote. “It’s like 100 bucks is the new 20, and $1,000 is the new $100. Has everything just gotten too expensive for the middle class?”

While the inflation figures don’t quite add up to the exact math everyone is using, the number of separate accounts making the same comparison does seem to highlight the fact that this is a widely shared feeling, making it clear that some people really do feel like everything is more expensive than it’s ever been.
