Man’s DIY Patio Roof Video Has Thousands Convinced They’re Carpenters
As homeowners, there is so much to know and remember. From maintenance schedules to learning how to take care of small projects around the house, there’s a lot to keep people busy.
Then there are those small DIY projects that homeowners take on when they think they can work on an upgrade or renovation by themselves, saving some money in the process. When the project takes longer than expected, suddenly owning a home can feel like a full-time job.
Unfortunately, for homeowners who aren’t actually career contractors or builders, taking on those little projects can end badly, especially if a mistake is made that turns that upgrade into a major downgrade. Take adding a patio roof to your home as an example. While building a small structure could seem like an easy task, a man from BAS Renovations says that there are a lot of mistakes that could cause your roof to literally come crashing down around you.
He demonstrated those mistakes in a video, showing homeowners what they need to know before trying to build a patio roof for themselves. Now, his video is going viral as people tell the contractor that they feel like professional carpenters after watching the short clip.
Man’s Epic Patio Roofing Video Goes Viral
The construction pro took viewers through the process of building a patio roof step by step, showing some of the mistakes that can cause a project to become unstable. In each example, he carefully labeled the different pieces of construction materials to make it easier for people to understand concepts like “span” and specific types of lumber, like beams.
He also offered instructions on the correct way to do things so that people could learn the right process, explaining why each step mattered to the overall safety and structural integrity of the patio roof.
People Loved the Video
The video had more than 4,300 comments, with a lot of people saying that they were mesmerized by the whole process and couldn’t look away. “Am I [going to] build a roof? No. Did I watch till the end? Yes,” one person joked.
“You made me a carpenter in one reel,” another person chimed in.
“I’m taking appointments for patios and decks; I just got my degree off this video,” yet another added.
All jokes aside, this video does seem like it could give someone the confidence to tackle a project like this on their own. However, handy homeowners would do well to remember that different municipalities have different rules when it comes to building structures like this. And while you may be able to safely construct something like this by yourself, you could still need your local township or county to weigh in on the plans.
According to the Bob Vila website, building codes can vary depending on the state where the property is located. Not only that, but some counties and local governments have their own additional rules and requirements.
For example, Alabama has statewide building codes, but they only apply to certain types of structures (like schools, state buildings, and private commercial buildings). Local counties have the option to use those codes or adopt their own regional building codes, which means homeowners could need to check local building codes and permit requirements.
