This Livestock Dog Dug Herself an Underground ‘Condo’ With Three Bedrooms

Some dogs are known for their digging, like terriers and dachshunds. However, when these little pups do dig, they usually just mess up the garden and tear up the lawn. For example, you wouldn’t expect one of those dogs to dig themselves an underground bunker to hang out in.

But that’s exactly what Instagrammer @hansenfamilybarnyard says their livestock dog did. The family recently shared a video of their dog Sophie’s handiwork, showing off how she built an underground “condo,” where she spends her free time when she’s not busy working the farm.

The layout is seriously impressive, and according to the video, it boasts “three bedrooms” and is big enough for a 6-foot-tall man to squeeze into and explore. Based on this video, it looks like this pup may have a real future in real estate if she ever grows tired of being a livestock dog.

And if the comments on the video are any indication, she may not be the only dog out there building massive underground tunnel systems, since several people took to the comments of the viral video to share similar stories about their own digging doggies.

The video opens up by introducing Sophie, who looks like she might be some type of big breed dog, like a Great Pyrenees. Then the video quickly switched to Sophie’s hobbies, which include digging holes. The woman doing the voice-over joked that she might be part fox as she sent her son Joel into the hole to explore.

He took the camera and a flashlight into the hole to see what Sophie was doing down there. That’s when he discovered at least three separate sections, each of them big enough for her to curl up in and relax. The woman described it as basically a “three-bedroom condo,” and laughed about how the dog basically lives there when she’s not helping with the other animals.

Some People Share Stories About Their Own Dogs

Apparently these doggie condos aren’t exactly a new thing, since several people in the comments posted their own stories. One person explained how her two childhood dogs worked together to build massive tunnels under the yard in their Florida home when she was a kid.

“My brother and I were maybe eight and 10 years old, but I remember it being very spacious to where both of us could fit down there with both of the dogs and move around on our knees and not be right on top of each other,” they wrote.

Another person said their puppy had this habit for a while as well. “When my golden retriever was a puppy, she dug dens and tunnels like this in the snow mountains after shoveling. Given the opportunity, she’ll dig dirt too,” they wrote.

Then some joked about the situation. “That is so dangerous, oh my god,” one person wrote. “If you are not careful, she might become a landlord, raise the rents and start speculating with property prices!”

All kidding aside, underground burrows can pose a safety risk if the surrounding soil collapses, particularly if a person or animal is inside. Even if Sophie has put a lot of work into her underground hideout, it’s safest for the family to avoid entering it.
