Older Siblings Won’t Share Father’s Inheritance With Half-Sisters, Sparking Family Dispute
It is not uncommon for families to unite in the face of grief. However, one father’s final wishes have left his four adult children divided over a difficult question: should an inheritance be shared equally, even when the will says otherwise?
The two older siblings inherited the bulk of their late father’s estate, while their younger two half-sisters received substantially less. Now the half-sisters want a larger share, and the disagreement has escalated to threats of legal action.
One of the siblings receiving more of the funds turned to Mumsnet on Oct. 9. Posting under the username ShootingStarsRacingCars, they asked whether refusing to share the inheritance was unreasonable.
The poster and their brother had already decided against sharing, but they were still “curious as to what others would do or think of this situation.”
An Unequal Inheritance Reopens Old Wounds

ShootingStarsRacingCars explained that their parents divorced when the original poster and their brother were children. Their father remarried and had two more daughters, but he remained relatively distant from his children.
As an adult, the poster saw their father approximately four times a year. They also lost touch with their half-sisters, whom they described as practically strangers.
“No fallout,” they added, explaining, “just nothing in common and a father who wasn’t exactly family focused.”
When their father died, his will left almost everything to his two older children, with considerably smaller amounts going to his younger daughters.
The poster admitted they didn’t know why their father had divided his estate this way. “I can’t imagine not leaving my estate equally to my children but who knows what was going on his mind or relationships,” they mused.
Their brother had reportedly heard from an aunt that their father didn’t have a good relationship with his younger daughters. However, the poster couldn’t confirm whether that influenced the inheritance.
The half-sisters subsequently asked for a larger share and threatened legal action. The poster said they had obtained legal advice and believed the will was valid, explaining that their father had lived outside the United Kingdom (where the children live).
Further details complicated the family picture. ShootingStarsRacingCars revealed that their own mother is wealthy, meaning they and their brother could potentially inherit more someday. Their half-sisters’ mother has died, although the poster said they knew little about the sisters’ finances.
They also described years of limited contact with their half-sisters, saying invitations to family occasions had gone unanswered.
“If my brother hadn’t been left the same as me, I’d have shared with him,” ShootingStarsRacingCars shared. However, the situation felt different concerning their half-sisters.
The Debate Commenced
The discussion drew differing opinions about whether the siblings should respect their father’s wishes or divide the inheritance more evenly.
“His money, his decision, and you don’t know what went on in the background,” wrote commenter LeftFooter. Another suggested the father might have left more to his older children to make up for his limited involvement in their lives.
Others questioned the fairness of the arrangement. “I’ll never understand those that don’t treat their children equally. It’s so very hurtful,” wrote itstoughatthetop, though they added, “Saying this though OP, it wasn’t you that did the dirty on them so it’s not up to you to fix it.”
“Do the decent thing and share it out equally!” urged another reader, arguing that all four children deserved equal consideration. They considered enacting the will as it is written to be “selfish and greedy.”
Commenter Anxioustealady raised a different question: “[What] If your mother wasn’t wealthy and had already passed away, and your father gave his money to your half siblings who have a wealthy mother?”
The poster admitted that they weren’t sure how they would feel in that situation. They pointed to their limited relationship with their half-sisters, including unanswered invitations to family gatherings. “Now we just feel like this isn’t our problem,” they wrote.
The Mumsnet post closed with 1515 votes. Of those, only 19% voted that ShootingStarsRacingCars was being unreasonable; 81% felt ShootingStarsRacingCars was reasonable in their opinions.
The poster remained firm about keeping the inheritance, even as commenters debated what was fair. Their father’s reasons for dividing his estate so unevenly remain unknown, leaving his children to contend with a family divide that his final wishes may have deepened.
