Homeowner Shows Off McDonald’s Boo Buckets in the Most Creative Way
If you’re of a certain age, chances are that you remember the heyday of McDonald’s Boo Buckets. These delightful buckets were sold as part of the Happy Meal from Oct. 11-31 in 1986. The original buckets were designed to look like a jack-o’-lantern, and each one came with a different face.
The buckets changed over the years, according to Nightmare Nostalgia, and McDonald’s eventually added a few different versions to the lineup, including a green witch and a white ghost in the 1990s. They became collectors’ items, and kids (and those who are kids at heart) raced to the fast-food chain to get their hands on the latest designs when they were released.
Fast-forward to modern times, and McDonald’s is still at it, releasing the annual Boo Buckets each October to the delight of people everywhere. But what’s a person to do with all of these buckets when you collect them from year to year? According to one Threads user, there’s a really great way to show them off.
That’s because @thatrussellholly has figured out a way to turn her bucket collection into a light-up display that she happily hangs over her front door for all to see. Best of all, she told her followers how she put it together so that other Boo Bucket enthusiasts can do the same thing at their homes this Halloween.
First, You’ll Need Access to a 3D Printer

The DIYer shared her design, captioning the photo with the words, “The beacons are lit.” While many people got the Lord of the Rings reference and were delighted to respond with “And Rohan will answer,” there were plenty who wanted to know exactly how she pulled it off.
“How did you do this? I need to do this with my buckets,” one person wrote.
“This 3D print file lets you put a tea light in the lid and keeps the light safe from water,” she responded, sharing a link to the design. “I used tea lights that have a timer, so they turn on around 7 p.m. automatically.”
This Idea Came at the Perfect Time
ABC News reports that retro Halloween decorations are big this year, which means using your Boo Buckets to decorate will keep you right on trend. But that doesn’t mean that you need to run to McDonald’s if you want to keep with this year’s styles, since there are plenty of ways that you can participate in nostalgic Halloween.
The outlet shared a list of items people can buy; however, true nostalgic Halloween may resonate even more for people who turn to DIY methods like the Threads user did. After all, if you’re old enough to remember when Boo Buckets first hit the market, you’re likely old enough to remember how a lot of the decorations that were hung around the home were actually things that you or your child made at school.
