Husband Gets Angry Over Unswept Leaves, But the Lawn Isn’t Even Real

One Mumsnet user has drawn a line in the autumn leaves: they are not sweeping them up every single day.

In a Sept. 10 post to Mumsnet, the individual, under the username Whyhavethestreetlightsgoneoff, explained that their husband likes to keep the front and back gardens clear of leaves. The poster, meanwhile, does not particularly care whether the yard looks freshly swept.

What might typically come down to a mere difference in gardening preferences escalated. According to Whyhavethestreetlightsgoneoff, “Second time tonight after work that he was storming around angrily, muttering under his breath about having to be the one who always does it, slamming around angrily.”

The poster made it clear to their husband they do not wish to add this chore to their list “on top of doing every other single thing in the house and with Dc [dear child/children].”

Some commenters wondered whether the husband might be worried about how the leaves will impact the yard.

Not quite.

There is One Rather Important Detail About The Lawn

After all, on a conventional lawn, clearing large amounts of fallen leaves can serve a purpose. Many purposes, in fact, once you throw in repurposing the leaves themselves. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends removing heavy leaf cover so it does not block light and smother living grass.

Except that does not apply to this particular landscape.

The poster revealed that the grass is artificial, adding that it “looks fairly realistic though.” They also said their husband puts the collected leaves into bags and throws them away.

Fallen Leaves Aren’t Necessarily Garden Waste

Even when dealing with leaves scattered across a lawn—real or artificial alike—throwing them away is not the only option.

The RHS recommends moving fallen leaves into garden beds or beneath plants, where they can break down, enrich the soil, or provide a natural habitat for any nearby wildlife.

Gardeners can also turn them into leaf mould. According to the RHS, damp leaves stored together gradually decompose into a material with the dual purpose of improving soil and serving as mulch.

Beneath the post is the characteristic Mumsnet poll asking “Am I being unreasonable?” Among Mumsnet users who encountered the post, the results were resounding. In the final poll, 95% of 1,658 voters said Whyhavethestreetlightsgoneoff was not being unreasonable.
