Fall is Now a Top Season for Weekend Getaways on Airbnb, New Data Suggests
The idea of vacation season in America usually conjures images of a blazing sun in a cloudless sky, shimmering waves, and sparkling summer beaches. However, when it comes to quick weekend escapes, fall has taken the lead—at least where Airbnb travelers are concerned.
The company says U.S. guests took more weekend trips in autumn 2025 than in any other season that year.
The finding comes from Airbnb’s own booking data, which compared weekend trips taken by U.S. travelers during equivalent three-month periods in fall, summer, spring and winter 2025.
And that preference appears poised to continue this year. In a July survey commissioned by Airbnb, 60% of U.S. adults said they were planning a weekend getaway this fall.
Fall Is Winning The Weekend
Airbnb based its 2025 comparison on trips U.S. travelers booked through its platform. For fall, the company examined weekend trips with check-in dates between Sept. 2 and Dec. 1 and compared them with equivalent three-month periods during the other three seasons.
In a nationally representative online survey commissioned by Airbnb and conducted by Focaldata in July, 60% of 2,000 U.S. adults said they were planning a weekend getaway this fall.
Interest in fall travel is also showing up in what Airbnb users save for later reference. The company says fall-themed wishlist activity has grown compared with last year. Terms such as “fall getaway,” “fall foliage,” “leaf peeping,” “apple picking,” and “fall road trip” fuel that unprecedented increase in apparent autumnal interest.
The nature of weekend trips and cozy fall getaways fits comfortably in the very atmosphere of the season itself. Fall offers shorter escapes built around foliage, scenic drives, orchards, and just a few manageable nights away as opposed to a full-length, more ambitious and more demanding vacation.
These Destinations In Particular Are Drawing Fall Interest
Airbnb also identified the U.S. destinations seeing some of the strongest growth in searches for fall weekend trips. The ranking is based on searches made during the second quarter of 2026 for September through November stays, compared with searches for the equivalent period a year earlier.
The company’s top trending destinations include Tannersville, New York; Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania; Blue Ridge, Georgia; Blowing Rock, North Carolina; and Fayetteville, West Virginia.
Rounding out the list are: Glenwood Springs, Colorado; Oshkosh, Wisconsin; Bend, Oregon; Camden, Maine; and Hartford, Vermont. Many of these locales offer attractions perfectly suited to a fall weekend away: mountain scenery, changing leaves, scenic railroads, orchards, trails and small, quaint, and cozy downtowns.
While these numbers do not definitively state that Americans now take more vacations in the fall compared to summer, they do suggest that among U.S. travelers using Airbnb, fall has reached its full potential as the best season to squeeze in another trip before winter has everyone bundling under piles of blankets til spring.
