Snobby Neighbor Loudly Voices That RV Travel is for the Less Affluent

Getting a chance to travel around in the comfort of your own recreational vehicle (RV) is a dream for many people. The costs associated with the purchase, upkeep, and storage of these vehicles can put that dream out of reach for some people. This is especially true when you consider the fact that newer towable RVs currently go for between $14,000 and $150,000, according to Bish’s RV.

However, it seems like not everyone thinks of RV travel as being the luxury that it can be. One mom shared her recent interaction with her neighbor, who she says thumbed her nose at the family’s RV. Mumsnet user Jiuenk posted about the unpleasant moment on Aug. 10, 2026, voicing her frustration over what happened.

In her post, she explained how she, her husband, and her daughter were all in the street cleaning out the RV when a neighbor passed by. It sounds like the OP was clearly still bothered by the exchange, and she turned to the message board to vent her frustrations and to ask if she was being unreasonable for being upset about the exchange.

While many people came down on the side of the OP, there were a few who took a surprising stance about the interaction. And it may just make you think twice about getting upset about an off-the-cuff remark the next time you hear something you don’t like.

The OP Shared Her Story Before Polling Readers

According to Jiuenk, the neighbor had been walking with her child as she passed by where the family was cleaning out the RV. “The woman said, ‘You’re lucky you never have to go in one of them, and we can go abroad,'” the OP recalled. “I thought, you cheeky cow. We have had some great trips away over the years, and go abroad at times too. I wish I said something to her now!”

It looks like 1,447 people responded to the poll asking if the OP was being unreasonable or not, with 77 percent of the votes coming down on her side.

People Said the Neighbor Likely Has No Idea How Much Motorhomes Cost

A lot of commenters immediately jumped in to defend the OP (and her RV), calling the woman “ungracious” and “ignorant” for making such a comment. Then there were those who pointed out just how big of an investment these vehicles can be.

“She obviously has no idea how expensive motorhomes are,” one person wrote.

And truly, they really are expensive. In addition to the cost of purchasing an RV, you could be looking at even more costs, including insurance (the My RV Selector website puts this at between $200 and $600 a year for towable models). Plus, there’s the annual registration fee, which can vary by state.

Those who aren’t lucky enough to be able to store their RVs at home could be looking at storage costs (indoor options could cost as much as $400 a month). And of course, there’s routine maintenance and repairs, which the website says have an average annual cost ranging between $500 and $2,000+ a year.

RVs Aren’t for Everyone

All that being said, there was one comment that really stood out from the rest, and it could change the way you think about those comments that get stuck in your head.

“Maybe she’s just not a fan of motorhomes,” one person wrote, advising the OP not to take the comment too personally. This comment really does serve as a good reminder that just because someone else doesn’t like something you enjoy, it doesn’t mean that they are putting you down.

Hopefully the OP eventually found a way to make peace with the comment, especially if she truly loves traveling so much with her family. It would be a shame for her to let someone else’s comment about the RV ruin her good time.
