There’s making a bad first impression, and then there’s making a baaaad first impression. A Redditor shared the story of how he had the second experience when he met his new neighbor recently, after he was on the receiving end of a punch.
Reddit user Mrbigdaddy72 brought his story to the Neighbors from Hell subreddit, titling the story, “Never expected this to happen.”
In his crazy story, he explained how he found a man out in his garden one night, and when he went out to confront him, the OP found himself on the receiving end of a gut punch. The whole interaction devolved into further violence, and the neighbors eventually had to come out and break them up.
But that’s not all; the OP later made a second post that shared some insight into how everything fell apart so quickly, and it left most of Reddit saying, “awwww” by the time his story was done.

A Redditor Got Into a Fistfight With His New Neighbor
According to the OP, he keeps a veggie garden in his front yard, which is where he found his new neighbor standing at 8 p.m. Only, he didn’t know it was his neighbor at the time, and since he thought it was just a random man, he went out to confront the veggie thief.
“Wound up getting into a physical fight, and my wife had to call the cops,” the OP explained. “My neighbors heard it and thankfully came out to help. We traded some punches, but I was able to sit on his chest, and a neighbor helped restrain him till cops got here.”
He said that this was the first time in his 11 years of gardening that something like this has ever happened, and he admitted that he would’ve gladly shared some of his food if he’d only been asked.
The Neighbor’s Wife Later Explained the Situation
As if the first part of the story isn’t unusual enough, the OP added an update shortly after, filling everyone in on what had happened in the days after the brawl.
“His wife came over to my house when I got home from work yesterday,” he wrote, sharing that the man had recently turned 27 and started exhibiting signs of schizophrenia. “She kept apologizing over and over and said he was supposed to be in a psychiatric ward but somehow was released. She kept trying to offer to pay me for the damages.”
The OP revealed that he refused to take her money, and now he and his wife plan to go down to the courthouse to try and have the charges dropped and request a psychiatric evaluation be done instead. He also admitted that he brought the neighbor’s wife and their 2-year-old some of the veggies from his garden.
Redditors Celebrated the OP’s Good Deed
While this story was a wild ride from start to finish, the people in the comments couldn’t help but appreciate the kind of person the OP had to be to have such a quick change of heart, opting to help the neighbor even after he was attacked by him.
“You are outstanding. I love your empathy and kindness; please never change,” one person wrote. The OP says he’ll be going to court next week, so hopefully he shares a third update and lets everyone know how it goes. In a situation like this, it’s really easy to feel for everyone involved and hope that it all works out in the end.
