Readers who are interested in physical books, especially travel guides, are probably not interested in anything AI-generated. A post in Reddit’s Mildly Infuriating subreddit complained after noticing an AI-generated message in an Italian travel guide.
The book is titled Pitigliano: The City of Stone and Sunlight 2026, credited to Gerald Baker. Its Amazon listing says the 126-page paperback was independently published on Feb. 23, 2026.
The buyer shared a photograph showing the leftover chatbot exchange at the end of the introduction. They called the guide “absolutely worthless” and said it contained general information that could apply to almost any city.
According to the buyer, Amazon refunded the purchase and did not ask for the book to be returned. The paperback remained available for $11.99 as of Aug. 6 with only 1-star reviews.
An unfinished chatbot exchange made it into print
The original Reddit post (the photo has since been deleted) shows the open book with the unexpected message. The passage offers to write “the full first chapter of the guide” and closes by asking, “Do you want me to do that next?”
Amazon’s description promises information about Pitigliano’s history, restaurants, hiking routes, transportation, and parking. The buyer claimed the finished guide lacked those kinds of useful specifics.
Amazon requires publishers to disclose AI-generated material
Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing guidelines require publishers to tell the company when a book contains AI-generated text, images or translations. Amazon does not require disclosure when AI is used only to edit or brainstorm material written by a person.
That disclosure is made to Amazon at the time of publication and is not shown on the product page. There is no public indication of what, if anything, was disclosed for this guide. Amazon also says it may investigate books with inaccurate content or other problems that create a poor customer experience.
